Remember the Vampire Facial? In 2014, Kim Kardashian fascinated (and horrified) the world when she posted a selfie with her own blood slathered all over her face. A Dermapen, which contained nine acupuncture-sized needles, was used to inject her face with her own blood. It's a method known as microneedling—the idea is to stimulate collagen and elastin fibers to make skin smoother. While the procedure is still done today, less extreme and less painful DIY-friendly variations of the process have since emerged.
WHAT IS MICORNEEDLING?
Otherwise known as derma-stamping or microneedling, dermarolling is the use of tiny needles to create a controlled micro-injury on the skin surface. While it sounds a little scary, the process stimulates collagen and elastin production for plumper, more radiant skin. By creating small areas of injury, it jumpstarts the skin's repair cycle, inducing collagen and elastin synthesis
HOW DOES MICRONEEDLING BENEFIT THE SKIN?
It’s an extremely effective treatment for the reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, pore size and the collagen stimulation also improves skin texture, as well as improving the appearance of acne scars. As if that wasn't good enough, it creates a channel to the deeper layers of skin to fast-track your skincare ingredients to make them work even harder.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM MICRONEEDLING?
Microneedling works on all skin types but is especially effective on those who have scarring and pigmentation. It can be used in acne treatments to help improve the appearance of scars by breaking up the scar tissue and stimulating the induction of new collagen and elastin. It can also be used on hyperpigmentation because it helps shed the top layer of the skin while also helping in the absorption of topical agents that can be used concurrently to help prevent the formation of new pigmentation.
ARE MICRONEEDLING TREATMENTS PAINFUL?
While the process involved in Dermaroller therapy might sound painful, it's actually a fairly pleasant experience. A topical anaesthetic is applied to the area being treated, meaning that the tiny micro needles that pierce through the outermost layer of skin are barely felt.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE-EFFECTS FROM DERMAROLLER TREATMENTS?
The side-effects of this treatment are minimal. While immediately after treatment the skin will feel a little sensitive, tight and red, this will subside within a few hours. Within two days the skin will have healed itself and you will begin to see how the treatment is helping to improve the skin’s appearance.
